Message To Moderator

Dear Moderator,

My chosen brief was to create a music promo package including music promo video, digipak and advert. I made a promo package for the first artist James Blunt for the genre soft rock. I worked within a group with Declan Ryan, Alex Inkster and Craig Bryden to plan, construct and evaluate my coursework for A2 Media Studies.

We used the Canon DSLR cameras (model 700d) to record our footage and we used Final Cut Pro X to edit it. I enjoyed constructing our advert and digipak the most as it allowed me to expand and gain new skills with using Photoshop.

My blog is best viewed by using the browser "Google Chrome."

I hope you enjoy my work.

Yours Faithfully,

Bethany Davies

Final Cut

This is our final cut of our music video for James Blunt's song, 'When I Find Love Again'.

Question 3 Draft

Font Analysis

Font analysis from bethdavies5

In the above document, I have embedded possible fonts that we will use for both our advert and digipak. To find these fonts, we used the website dafont.com.

Draft For Advert

Plan for advert from AlexInkster

In the above document, we have written 6 possible ideas for out final advert idea.

Reccee Shots

The above shots are images that we took at Roseberyy Topping, which is where we intend to film the majority parts of our music video. I feel that, when we film our music video, by filming the journey up the mountain will help portray an amplifying narrative of him finding love again. This will be done by filming the main actor (James Blunt) on his journey up the mountain where he will find his new love at the very top of the mountain.

Photo Shoot Contact Sheets

I decided to take a variety of different photo shoots of our main actor. This has worked well and gave us variety of different image to work with for our advert and digipak.

CD

For our CD design, we decided to include an image of James Blunt's instrument that he uses in the music video itself. I believe that this is effective as it increases brand identity as it will help the audience make links between the music video and the disk itself. Similarly, the disk also has strong brand identity with the advert and digipak as the colour scheme and font has been used through out. Furthermore, I believe that the disk follows conventions of real media texts by having copy write information around the outside of the disk, which is used by a wide range of institutions.

Advert Idea 3

This image is our third idea for our fina advert to promote our music video. From our last idea, we have adpated this idea by using a pale pink colour for the background as well as using the auto contrast tool as well as changing the opacity in order to make his face become clearer and make it the main focus of the advert. However, I believe that this idea lacks certain components in the top half of the advert. Therefore, for our next idea, we plan to use a different image that captures the whole of the artist and then combine this idea and use reviews about our album.

Advert Idea 2

The above image is our second idea for our final advert. We have maintained our idea of using the double exposure technique - as we feel that it has showed creativity - whilst also showing links between the video and the main artist. This advert has worked effective in this sense, however, it is very weak in quality as the artist face is faded as well as the fact that the advert lacks colour.

Digipak

The image above is the flat plan of our final digipak. I feel that this works effectively as it follows conventions of other digipaks similar to our music genre. This is firstly because the use of the artist alone being the main focus of the 3 main parts of the digipak that the audience will see first. Therefore, this increases the brand identity as people will be aware who the artist is and immediately be aware of which album it is. Another way, I feel that the digipak is successful is that the same font has been used on both the digipak as well as the advert itself. This also increases brand identity for the audience as it is easy for them to make the link between both the advert and digipak.

Rough Cut 9

For our rough cut 9, we have edited the music video to give it more thought beats. This is effective as it keeps the audience engaged throughout. For our next rough cut, it will be our final cut, of which we intend to re-shoot several shots to improve the quality of them as well as clearly identifying the thought beats. We will do this activity in a group of four as, that way, we can receive a variety of different opinions.

Advert Idea 1

For our first attempt at our final advert, we used the double exposure technique in order to combine an image of the artist with the image of the one of the locations we filmed at. I feel that this idea has worked well as it establishes clear links between our music video and the advert itself. However, I do not believe that the image is he best image that we could have used as there is no direct address with the audience. Therefore, I will try and create an alternative idea with an image where the artist is making eye contact with the audience.

Final Advert

This is our final advert, which we have created on photoshop. Our main image of the advert is an image of our main actor which has been overlayed with an image from Seaton Carew beach - which is one area of which we filmed at. I feel that as a consequence of using an image from Seaton, it allows the target audience to establish a clear link between the advert and the music video. The advert also follows conventions from the original James Blunt's albums as a consequence of the chosen font as it is very similar to the one he uses. I feel that this is effective as it allows the audience to identify the brand identity - thus recognising the album just by the fonts used.

Rough Cut 8

In rough cut 8, we have added more lip singing shots - which we took at Seaton Carew beach. I feel this has made the video look better as it gives the video more variety of shots in different environments. I believe that this has made the video have more depth to it and follows the conventions of James Blunt's current videos - which tend to include approximately 5 different environments.

Evaluation Question 4

For question 4, we have created a Pinterest board - which we have pinned posts on how we have used each media technology in each stage: research and planning; construction as well as evaluating our final products. Please find below a link to my Pinterest board for question 4.

Lesson Update

Today we have rotated within the group to give each of us a chance to try each aspect of creating our final products. Today, we have edited our music video in pairs to help identify our thought beats as well as give an alternative opinion on what else we could include for a different variety of shots. Through doing this process, we have identified that we need to re-shoot several shots as things were in the frame that were not meant to be. Therefore, we will be adding new shots in as well as making sure the thought beats have been identified over the period of this week.

Rough Cut 7

Rough cut 7 has added to the idea of keeping to one girl, by re-shooting the scenes but with the same girl as the end and the beginning. This has helped develop a clearer narrative and make the audience aware he was not seeing two girls at once - but showing the development of their relationship over the time period.

Rough Cut 6

For this rough cut, we have changed the ending of the music video in order to change the narrative and leave it in a more amplifying way. This is because it can be inferred to represent the start of his relationship with the one girl, or it could represent them getting back together - giving a cyclical narrative.

Rough Cut 5

For rough cut 5, we have added more shots to give the music video a more clear narrative as we focus on one girl, instead of two. I feel that this works better as it has helped to improve the continuity of the edit.

Rough Cut 4

For our rough cut 4, we have edited more shots into the video, in order to create more flash back scenes. However, the thought beats have not been clearly met, which is what we will plan to improve on for next lesson.
